Dennis Prager announces his divorce

Anybody hear Dennis Prager today? I just caught the last few minutes of
what had apparently been a teary hour in which he announced that he is
divorcing his wife of 18 years, Fran. If he offered some explanation
for this, I didn't hear it. The bit I did hear was a woman caller who
had evidently been so upset by Prager's news that she interrupted her
doctor husband with a patient to cry about the news.

I don't want to make light of what must be a personally painful
situation for Prager, even though I frequently find him a buffoon: I
don't doubt that he takes his family seriously. This has to be a
considerable professional humiliation, too, since he styles himself a
marriage counselor and relationship expert.

But I would be interested in anybody's observations about this turn in
his career. My prediction: freed of his household ties, Prager is going
to run for political office.

oddly enough, I must have tuned in right at the same time you did. I
also missed the reading of the letter (announcement) Prager referred to.
Also, the first call I heard was the one you mentioned with the woman
saying how she had called her husband in tears.
To me the most noteworthy part of the story was the reaction of
that woman and a few of the subsequent callers. I have often thought
that, over the past few years, Prager fans have gotten MUCH worse in
terms of the absolutely mindless fawning. I'm not sure if you ever
listen to Medved, but his thoughts, opinions, political leanings, etc
are, by and large, identical to Prager...yet, if you listen to Medved on
any given day, you won't hear the type of sickening comments made on a
very regular basis by the Prager fans ("Oh, dennis! You're my hero! You
have no idea how much you affect my life!"). So, anyway, I guess it
shouldn't be too much of a surprise that these people would react as if
they were just told that they had terminal cancer because their idol ,
God forbid, is getting a divorce.
Re a political career for Prager---- I just don't see it. Any
opponent could take some of the mindless ramblings made on his show on
a daily basis and pretty much make sure that he wouldn't get more than
10% of the vote. This week was particularly good in terms of reinforcing
some of Prager's lack of deep thought when they replayed his
"highlights" of the year.

Hello, Nelson--I think we've traded observations on Prager before. Are
we the only ones who find him entertaining?

You are correct: I can't think of any other public figure who encourages
gushing flattery the way Prager does... L Ron Hubbard, maybe? Sometimes
he brazenly solicits it, other times it just seems to be part of the
culture of his show. He is constantly praising himself, that must have
something to do with it. I wonder what the tone is at his public
gatherings, like those singles get-togethers he does from time-to-time.

I agree that he's probably said too many dopey things on the air to win
statewide election (though voters seem very willing to look past
evidence of foolishness--I remain astounded by Bush's re-election). But
he's clearly interested in running--he mentions it from time to time,
and my guess is that the divorce might free him up to give it a try.
Remember when he "almost" ran for the senate a few years ago? He tried
to make his decision not to do so sound like a selfless pledge, but the
sense I got was that he was unwilling to take a pay cut. So that might
keep him from it again, but while I don't think he'd be elected, I
suspect that he thinks he would win in a landslide. Prager would make
for an entertaining campaign, you gotta admit.

Those few minutes about his divorce were pretty much all the Prager I
heard this week--I missed the annual "best of."

so please excuse any errors.

Yeah... I used to be a big Prater Fan, but his ego and pompousness started
to irritate me.

Yeah.. it's too bad about the divorse. But you are right, it is very scary
that people like the woman mentioned below, elevate Prager to such a level
that their world stops and crashes with announcement of his divorce. This
woman ought to be embarrassed at herself.

Hello and Happy New Year...hope all is well on the East coast.
You've probably caught the latest with Prager...getting a divorce. I
don't recall when you moved back East and/or stopped listening to
Prager's show, but the changes would probably startle you. The number of
people who call in and treat him like some type of supreme cult figure
is really somewhat scary. He's only a friggin' talk show host with a
very clear agenda and tons and tons of opinions, some of which make
sense and others that are WAY off base. As you probably read, this
twisted hero worship is to the point that people were actually crying on
the air all because Prager is gettting a divorce. Hell, the way I figure

Hello and Happy New Year, Nelson!
I've been East of LA for nigh 8 years now......haven't heard the Pompous
One since then.....don't miss his sanctimonious hypocrisy, either.....I
subscribed to Sirius a couple of years ago to get Air America
Radio....then they moved exclusively to XM....but better yet, now I
listen religiously to Randi Rhodes, Al Franken, Mike Malloy, Sam Seder &
Garofalo, et al via free non-commercial podcasts....
www.airamericaplace.com
Also re-discovered a treasure I had left in LA....Stephanie
Miller......I subscribe to her podcasts as well......I still get to hear
from Limbaugh, O'Reilly & Hannity because their respective diatribes are
re-played on Air America for the sheer hilarity of their un-edited
utterings! But enough about me: how's by you?

Labrea,
I wasn't sure if you'd be able to get S. Miller on your Air America

impersonations. She and Franken are neck and neck for me in terms of
informative entertainment. What do you think of Ed Shultz......I don't
like him as much as the other two--definitely not as funny. Plus, his
voice is a dead ringer (IMO) for that of Rush Limbaugh.
Of course, with my twisted sense of humor, I still get a charge out
of Prager. A few months ago, he was talking about some topic and how he
was uncharacteristicly (spell?) undecided on the issue. He then said.."I
know this is unusual for me (not to have an opinion). I know that you
look to me for answers--and I look to myself for answers"...... and
some people wonder why I still listen to Prager..where in the hell else

Nelson,

The Stephanie Miller podcasts are well worth the cost as she and Jim
Ward the Voice Monkey are just brilliant.
Ed Shults is OK but since I started the podcast downloads from Air
America www.airamericaplace.com I always have plenty of commercial
free talk radio to plug in the car or computer or my ears.......
I just can't take the Pragers and other sanctimonious righties......I
actually learn things from the Franken show----and I highly recommend
The Majority Report with Sam Seder and Janine Gorafalo....just
great.....
East Coast has had an incredibly mild January.....much 50-60
degrees....but it got cold and snowy with a vengeance yesterday---now
the rest of the week will be mild....bizarre.....I have a gig at Mohegan
Sun Indian Casino next week----been writing Abramoff & GOP jokes for the
occasion......
Always great to hear from you and to know you are still around, carrying

BTW, a few weeks ago, you posted a comment about Prager's
predictions. Just out of curiousity, could you list a few of them,
especially predictions that definitly came true (not just in Prager's
opinion) and also were somewhat difficult to predict (saying that Bush
would defeat Gore is not really going out on a limb)
Also, it's not exactly a prediction, but many times he is able to tell if
caller has kids.

He's able to do this based on the position a caller will take on a certain
subject.

Prager Fan,
What you pointed out is one of Prager's more annoying habits. He'll
ask a caller "Are you Married?" "do you have kids?", "are you
divorced?". etc etc. If the caller says no, Prager simply slides past it
and keeps talking. If the caller says yes----------Prager goes into a
long spiel about how he could detect it, what clues gave it away, etc
etc etc----basically just patting himself on the back for being so
insightful

I don't know about nationally, but it L.A. it is probably a tiny fraction of
what it used to be. The Prage List is not even up and running any more, and
I rarely see posts about him in this newsgroup these days.

He had a good show about 20 years ago when he discussed religion and
philoshy on the week-ends. When he came to weekday radio, however, he
became just another Republican shill and showed an ego that I'm sure was a
turn-off to most listeners. He also did a 180 on several issues just to
make his views in line with those of neo-conservatives. This was the final
straw for me.

Agree with your comments re Prager's apparent ack of popularity on

UNINTENTIONAL humor of his show. I believe I've mentioned before that,

really sick of his "talent on loan from God" crap. What made it
particularly boring for me was the fact that it was done tongue in
cheek....why I get a kick out of Prager is because he says MUCH worse
things in terms of extolling his great virtues, but he is dead serious!
What really cracks me up is how he'll crow for the better part of a
show about how he was right about something (often he is only "right" in
his own opinion)...but then, invariably, at some point, he'll say "And
folks the point is not that I'm blowing my own horn. you know me better

Yes. I've posted here sometimes under the name "EltonFan" and to the Prager
Email List frequently under that same name. I usually acted more controlled
under that name.

Under "Prager Fan", I always went off the deep end. A lot of what I posted
was intentionally done that way to add some humor, but there was also some
seriousness in it as I was still a staunch Republican at the time and had
some support for Prager (although it had been waning for some time). Also,
I was indeed drunk where I claimed to be so.

I gave up Prager completley a couple of years back when it became clear that
he had morphed into nothing more than another Republican shill like all the
other right-wing hosts. I can't believe I followed this guy for so long and
defended him like cult members defend their leaders.

Like you, I sill listed to him once in a while for the humor value. Count
the number of times in one week where he uses the tired old platitudes: "yup
folks, I have been telling you this for years"; "all I want is clarity"; "I
fully acknowledge"; "they have a broken moral compass"; or "it astonishes
me". Also, listed to him constantly berate colleges and academia, and then
invite a professor on the air when he finds one with a view consistent with
his own.

Razor,
Prager's..."I'm more interested in clarity than in agreement"
mantra, which is repeated on a daily baisis, is perhaps his biggest lie.
Anyone who puts a minute of thought into Prager's show would quickly
realize that , if he was truly interested in "clairty", he would have a
slew of guests who could provide the opposing point of view on whatever
issue is at hand. Instead, he simply gets guests who agree with his
position. Then he sits back and says (repeatedly) "Yup,. I agree with
you. That's exactly what I've been saying. I just wanted my audience to
hear it from someone other than me".........and that's supposed to pass
for "clarity" on an issue.
I would estimate that , of the guests Prager has (including
"experts", authors, columnists, etc etc) an absolute minimum of 75% have
the exact same opinions as he does. The rather noticeable early tip off
is in the introduction. When Prager begins the hour "Folks we have one
of the greatest thinkers of our time..", you know for sure that it's a
hardcore conservative.
IMO, Prager is well aware of the fact that he doesn't do all that
well in debates. That's why he'd much rather have a constant parade of
"friendlies" on his show. What is particularly funny is when Prager
bravely decides to mix it up with a college student. When he takes on a
nervous, tongue tied 18 year old freshman, Prager does dominate...but...
whan he makes the mistake of taking on a 22 year old senior or grad
student it's not nearly that easy. They often hold their own against
him.

Steven,
As I've said before, you have to enjoy the great ironic humor of the
show. To me it's pretty interesting...almost like theatre...when, for
example, Prager expounds endlessly about how college professors never
have to take challenges to their positions, but, at the same time has a
(I assume, professional) call screener on hand and is also REAL quick to
(without comment) press the "cut off" button when he is getting the
worst of a debate on his show, You just HAVE to find the humor in that.
I also quite enjoy it when he is in a red faced tirade about someone or
something he doesn' t agree with ("The left this and the left that",
"Fools! Fools! Fools!","Those moral idiots!!")......and then immediately
goes from that to his happiness hour where he claims, among other
things, that he is an expert on being happy, how good it is for society
when individuals are happy, etc.
I'll admit that I have a twisted sense of humor, but some of the
stuff that comes from Prager couldn't be any funnier if it was scripted
by the best comic minds around.
As I've said before, Michael Medved has more knowledge in his pinky
than Prager has in his entire body but his show is, to me, not nearly as
entertaining (ie unintentionally humerous) as Prager's show.

Did I defend him? I am more interested in why some people seem so
consumed with the guy. I mean, there are some public figures I really
don't like, but I don't make it my life's mission to listen to them on
a regular basis so I can go on the internet and give every little
detail of what they did last year/last month/last week that makes me
not like them!

Having said that, I agree with Prager on many issues, and disagree on
some. I am not a Prager fanatic. I often check to see what he's talking

mean it's OK for you to do the same. You have your heterosexuality...
err, your standards to uphold. Let no man put asunder!

I believe they both spew from a magic channel... black magic maybe...
witchcraft perhaps. Salem was it?

Dennis - Let's play it straight. We all know that the legalization of
gay marriage is responsible for your latest failed attempt at
heterosexual marital bliss. If the world had only listened to you and
defended marriage.

You went before our Congress at the Defense of Marriage Act hearings and
told the world, begged the world, to negate the unholy same sex union.
You predicted the destruction of marriage if gays were given unions.
Now look at you, sadly, a victim of your own prediction.

The silver lining - there's a Wagner opera or a Truman Capote novel in
your story - "super heterosexual marriage defender can not stay
married". You could sell it to your Premium Prager subscribers. That
is, once the pain passes.

Damn Barney Frank! Damn Massachusetts! Damn Elton John!

Wasn't there anything your magician pal Uri Geller could do to magically
help save the sanctity of your marriage? Long ago, I heard you on your
show, introduce him as a guest and describe how he was actually bening
an item in front of your very eyes. Couldn't he have bent Fran more
towards you?

I'm sorry to mention Geller. Your attraction to him is probably an
embarrassment to you by now. That's not fair and not my business. I'm
getting off track. Maybe it would be better to just add a link
dedicated to Dennis Prager and his abundant love for the sanctity of
heterosexual Judeo Chr-stian marriage.

The post from January 3, 2006 at the link below might prove to be
helpful, a harbor in this storm.
